AI in teacher recruitment: a practical screening workflow

By MyValidCV · · 2 min read

A teaching vacancy can attract applications with very different qualifications, classroom experience and subject specialisms. The useful question is not which CV looks most impressive. It is which application contains evidence against this particular role. Use AI to organise that evidence, while named staff retain responsibility for interpreting it and deciding what happens next.

Define the teaching role before uploading CVs

Write the person specification with the subject lead and hiring manager. Separate essential requirements from desirable experience, and record what acceptable evidence looks like for each. Distinguish a qualification claimed in a CV from a qualification independently verified. Avoid treating school prestige, writing style or a familiar employer as a substitute for evidence of the work the role requires.

Keep comparison and safeguarding as separate tasks

The Department for Education publishes Keeping children safe in education for schools and colleges. Use the current guidance and your safeguarding lead to establish the applicable recruitment process. A CV alignment report is not a safeguarding clearance. Maintain a separate verification record and prevent an attractive comparison score from being interpreted as confirmation that required checks have been completed.

Calibrate the shortlist with a small sample

Ask two reviewers to assess a varied sample before using the process on a full campaign. Include an unconventional career path, a brief CV and an application with missing dates. Compare the evidence each reviewer found. Resolve unclear requirements before changing the scoring approach, and retain the original role specification so later applicants are assessed against the same agreed criteria.

Give applicants an understandable next step

Prepare acknowledgements, progress updates and outcome messages before the vacancy closes. Tell candidates how to raise a correction or request an adjustment. Keep feedback tied to the role and the reviewed application; do not invent explanations from a score. A school that communicates consistently can run an orderly process even when interview capacity is limited.
