AI screening skills recruiters and HR teams need

By MyValidCV · · 2 min read

An AI screening tool changes the reviewer’s work; it does not remove the need for recruitment judgement. Teams need a shared method for specifying evidence, checking outputs and escalating uncertainty. Training should use realistic applications and the actual workflow staff will operate, with room to challenge a result rather than simply learn where to click.

Translate a requirement into observable evidence

Ask reviewers to turn broad phrases such as strong communication into specific examples relevant to the job. Explain the difference between a requirement, evidence for that requirement and a follow-up question. Practise with an applicant whose terminology differs from the advert. Reward reviewers for identifying equivalent evidence rather than for reproducing the tool’s preferred wording or accepting every suggested match.

Read the source behind a generated summary

Give staff examples containing ambiguous dates, incomplete qualifications and unusually formatted experience. Ask them to locate the original passage and record what remains uncertain. A fluent explanation can still be unsupported. Keep a clear route for reporting a wrong extraction or misleading summary, and explain who decides whether a repeated problem requires changing the workflow or pausing the tool.

Practise fair and accessible review

Use examples involving career changes, non-standard qualifications and employment gaps. Train reviewers to focus on relevant evidence and to request clarification where appropriate. Government guidance addresses responsible deployment of recruitment AI, while GOV.UK explains reasonable adjustments in recruitment. Use those sources with your HR policies; a short tool demonstration is not a substitute for role-specific training and appropriate professional advice.

Assess competence through decisions and records

Ask each reviewer to complete a sample batch, explain an override and prepare a respectful candidate message. Compare their reasoning with an agreed review rubric. Record the training version and plan a refresher when requirements or software behaviour change. The goal is a repeatable review standard that survives staff turnover, not a certificate for having watched a product video.
